Domaine du Castel, is a family estate founded by Eli Ben-Zaken in 1988. The winery and the vineyards are located 17 km (10 miles) west of Jerusalem in Ramat Raziel in the Judean Hills at an altitude of 700 m (2300 feet) in one of Israel’s biblical - and best - wine regions. Domaine du Castel is a boutique winery with a yearly production of 8000 cases. Critics and clients see a continuous improvement in the wines. Today it is ranked as one of Israel's leading wineries.
Eli Ben-Zaken believes that good wine is only made from very good grapes. This is the reason why he decided to plant the vines at high density - to restrain the vines to produce low yields and therefore high quality grapes. They handpick the grapes and since the vineyards are close to the winery, the grapes arrive at a cool temperature.
Eli Ben-Zaken strives to make high quality fine wines in Old World traditional methods with modern technology. He only use the best French oak barrels to produce elegant and "classic" wines that well suited for aging. The cellar they excavated in the rock beneath the winery is the most impressive in Israel.
Domaine du Castel have been exporting their wines since 1999 to the USA, Switzerland, France, UK, Germany, Japan and many other countries.
Domaine du Castel is the first Israeli winery to get the rating of 90 points in the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator. Has three stars since 2004 in the famous Hugh Johnson Pocket Wine Book. Three times named "Wine of the Month" and one of the "100 Best Wineries of the World" by Decanter Magazine in 2002. Recently, the two most important French wine writers, Michel Bettane & Thierry Desseauve, have written a new book about "The World's Greatest Wines", and have decided to include Castel in it, as the only winery from Israel! The book was released in October 2006.
In 2003 Domaine du Castel became KOSHER maintaining its distinguished and exquisite quality, which is well known to its loyal and long-lasting customers in Israel and around the world.
